Singapore's newest data center is a biological marvel, a living, breathing alternative to traditional silicon chip servers. This cutting-edge facility, housed within the National University of Singapore's Centre for Life Sciences, processes data using human brain cells, marking a significant shift in the field of data processing and artificial intelligence. The brain cells are fed a cocktail of nutrients every three days, and their neural activity is translated into raw computing power, offering a unique and energy-efficient approach to data management.
The brainchild of Australian biotech startup Cortical Labs, this biological data center is a collaboration with NUS and data center operator DayOne. Cortical Labs has already commercialized a similar biological data center in Melbourne, and now it's bringing its innovative technology to Singapore for joint internal research and development. The facility in Singapore comprises 20 units of biological computers (CL1s), each housing at least 200,000 lab-grown neurons on an electrode-fitted silicon chip.
One of the key advantages of biological data centers, according to Cortical Labs founder and CEO Chong Hon Weng, is their ability to handle limited datasets and highly unpredictable conditions. He envisions applications in humanoid robots, where traditional servers struggle to provide the necessary training data for real-world scenarios. Biological data centers can also be more effective in cybersecurity, spotting anomalies without requiring vast training datasets.
Chong highlights the energy efficiency of biological data centers, a critical factor in Singapore's context. The country's data centers have imposed a temporary pause on construction due to high energy and water demands. Traditional data centers consume significant electricity, with data centers accounting for 5.3% of the country's electricity consumption in 2019 and rising to 7% in 2020. In contrast, brain cells use minimal energy and don't require cooling, with each CL1 unit consuming only 30 watts, less than a handheld calculator.
The biological data center in Singapore aims to address the challenges of electricity and water constraints while providing fast connections for data movement. Cortical Labs plans to expand to 1,000 CL1s, following regulatory approval and energy efficiency and safety tests. The Melbourne facility currently operates 120 CL1s, attracting paying customers from corporate research arms and universities experimenting with robotics and gaming.
While traditional silicon chips excel in fast, precise calculations for large language models like ChatGPT, biological data centers offer a unique and sustainable approach to data processing. The collaboration between Cortical Labs, NUS, and DayOne in Singapore is a significant step forward, paving the way for a greener and more innovative future in data center technology.
